Science

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are science learning expectations that define what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in science and are used by Compton Unified School District to provide an instructional model for all students. The NGSS standards provide students with a high-quality, internationally benchmarked science education that prepares them for college, careers, and informed citizenship. There are three-dimension for science learning - disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. Disciplinary core ideas may involve subject areas as life science, physical science, earth and space science, as well as engineering.

The science and engineering practices involve developing skills of asking questions, developing models, analyzing data, constructing explanations, and designing solutions. The crosscutting concepts focuses on big ideas that apply across domains like cause and effect, systems and system models, and structure. These three dimensions are woven together so students learn science by doing science, not memorizing facts.

Finally, science build ideas, focuses on problem-solving, and is designed so all students can access meaningful science learning.
